Calgary, Canada
We had an amazing flight with West Jet from Edinburgh to Calgary. I am not so confident when it comes to flying so I was nervous about the flight ahead of us. Canada was going to be the longest flight I had ever been on however, as soon as I saw the TV (and movie selection!), the pillow and blankets I knew it would be fun. Can you believe we got free food and drinks throughout the flight? It felt like first class but apparently it was just economy! Time flew by ;).
The time difference between Canada and Scotland are very different, Canada is 8 hours behind which lead to my first experience of jet lag. We woke up at 3am Canada time and struggled to get back to sleep, however, this meant our day started by watching a couple of movies… never done that before!
At 6am we went to the gym which was just downstairs in the our hotel, Fairfield Inn and Suites - Downtown. In the gym there was lots of things to do like run on the treadmills, work on the cross trainer and lift weights. Another first, I’ve never watched myself in the mirror working out! After the gym we were meant to go straight to breakfast, instead dad suggested a run around the local park. I was not happy because I was ‘hangry’ by this point. Eventually I got my chocolate waffle that I made with this cool machine that they had at the hotel.
My highlights in Calgary included the Devonian Gardens in TD Square. The gardens had massive colourful fish and loads of tall green plants as well as a children’s play park. I LOVE monkey bars! I also loved Peace Bridge and Peace Island which I felt was a very peaceful, healthy, happy place. I loved watching the squirrels run around the grass and climb trees. There was a great cowboy hat swing.
I also really enjoyed the Central Library where there were loads of things to do including lots of cool new books to read, magnet boards to leave fun messages, lego and building blocks. We got told off for making our tower too high, oops! The building was really lovely with lots of wood and awesome decoration.
In Calgary we witnessed a lot of homelessness and it made me feel sad that they had no home but hopeful that they would get one soon. There were also lots of people standing like statues on the street which I was confused to see. Mum and dad explained to me that they were taking illegal drugs. I have never seen this before and I found it quite scary.
I am glad that I got to go to Calgary, I enjoyed exploring here but I have now been and would not choose to go back.
Excited to go and pick up the RV now…more coming soon!
