Art Therapy - Holly Ferrie
Art Therapy- Holly Ferrie talks about art and the positive impact it has on her.
Hello my name is Holly and I am the artist behind the Instagram page ‘Abstract Art’. I have always loved art from a young age and followed that passion from high school onto University where I studied Interior Architecture/Interior Design at Edinburgh Napier.
In 2016, I took a career break to look after my two young boys full time from home. It was a big shock to the system as I have always been in employment since the age of 14! One night after a glass of prosecco I picked up a paint brush and put paint to canvas, from that night on I was hooked!!
I had dabbled with life drawing and painting during my university days but I had never really painted abstract. This form of painting is expressive and free flowing and it’s a great way to get my emotions down in a fast manner. There is no right or wrong way to paint abstract; it is my interpretation of how I want my paintings to look.
Abstract Art for me is all about emotions and feelings. I get a lot of my inspiration from different sources such as the East Lothian coastline to Interior Design. I am very lucky to live right next to the beach. I am drawn to the water and a lot of my paintings incorporate that, but not in an obvious way. It could be in the movement I have created on canvas or the colours I have used. Painting is like a workout and therapy all rolled into one, it clears my head and creates a sense of relaxation. Once I put brush to canvas, the endorphins kick in as soon as the first layer of paint is applied! I always paint to music and my taste is very ‘eclectic’ something my husband always laughs at!! I find this helps me zone out and create a relaxed and tranquil mood.
